Technical Setup

We’ll be testing this out in our “Session Zero,” and I’m not sure we’ll use everything, but I would plan on having the following ready to go:

  • Roll20 accounts for every player, even in households where you will be sharing a compute. I will send everyone an invite to the campaign.
  • Discord accounts for every player. If we decide we want audio chat, probably the best bet is to give everyone a phone or tablet with Discord installed and a headset or earpiece with a mike. Discord has “push to talk” and generally is viewed as the best audio solution for Roll20. If anyone prefers another conferencing app, let me know. (Roll20 has built in audio and video, and we can try that – lots of people say it adds to lag, but they’ve recently improved it. However, if it doesn’t work, we’ll have Discord ready to go.) I have a Discord server and will invite everyone.
  • The Firefox or Brave browser installed on your computer, with a profile that allows you to load it without add-ons. Ellie and I have been using Chrome without problems, but a lot of people recommend using Firefox or Brave with Roll20, so this way you will be ready to go if you do get technical probems.
  • If you want, you can install the Roll20 apps for iPad or Android. These don’t allow full play without a paid subscription, and they get pretty iffy reviews, but when they work, they should let players bring up their character sheets and roll dice, which would allow the shoulder surfer in each house to do a little more.
